School Uniform

At Bishop Justus Church of England School, our uniform reflects our values of Success through Faith, Love and Learning. A smart, consistent uniform helps create a strong sense of belonging, promotes equality and prepares students for learning each day.

Our uniform policy has been designed to be:

  • smart and practical
  • affordable for families
  • inclusive and flexible where appropriate
  • consistent for all students.

Where a student has a medical, religious or other exceptional need, parents should contact the school so that reasonable adjustments can be considered in line with our School Uniform Policy.

Students may choose from any of the approved uniform items regardless of gender.

Students should present themselves in a smart, professional manner.

Wearing the uniform

  • All students must always wear school uniform.
  • Any clothes worn underneath shirts and blouses for warmth should not be visible.
  • Sports kit, and such, should not be worn underneath school uniform.
  • ‘Sagging’ (wearing trousers below the belt line) is not permitted.
  • Clothing must not bear slogans or badges etc unless specifically authorised by the school.
  • Hoodies are not permitted to be worn on school premises.
  • Only school pins should be worn of the school blazer.

Jewellery and appearance

  • A wristwatch (not digital) may be worn.
  • No other jewellery is permitted, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, facial piercings or retainers (medical alert jewellery is permitted).
  • Years 7 to 9 must not wear makeup. Years 10 to 13 may wear light, natural-looking makeup.
  • False nails, nail extensions and temporary tattoos are not permitted.
  • Only clear nail varnish may be worn.
  • Hairstyles should be appropriate for school. Hairstyles, hair colours and headwear must not be extreme or distracting, while respecting the school's duties under equality legislation and individual circumstances. Hair colours should be a natural tone.

Where a student has a medical, religious or cultural reason that requires an adjustment to these expectations, parents should contact the school so that appropriate arrangements can be considered.

During the winter, students can wear the following items for PE at the discretion of staff:

  • Black long-sleeved tops underneath their normal PE t-shirt, or a games hoodie.
  • Plain black tracksuit bottoms.
  • Gloves may be worn if the sport does not involve throwing and catching.
  • Black leggings may be worn underneath shorts or skort.

Tights are not permitted underneath shorts or skort for hygiene reasons.
