Mathematics
We believe Mathematics is the universal language of patterns enabling us to build links and an appreciation of how ideas fit together to navigate the fast-paced change, increasingly data driven and interconnected world we live in. In the secondary curriculum learning mathematics plays a crucial role in transforming the way students perceive or think, not only developing quantitative reasoning skills but also extending learners’ sensitivities and awareness of their own natural mathematical powers of sense-making they bring to lessons as well as increasing the choice of actions to which learners have access in response to solving problems.
Knowledge in Mathematics
At Bishop Justus, we believe that powerful learning begins with a deep understanding of how knowledge works within each subject. We have developed subject-specific knowledge frameworks that set out the key areas of knowledge students will develop over time. These frameworks ensure that our curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and rooted in the distinctive nature of each subject. They help us to plan learning that enables students to build knowledge progressively and think like experts within different disciplines.

Progression Maps
Alongside our knowledge frameworks, our subject progression maps set out how students build and deepen their knowledge, understanding and skills over time. They make learning progression clear, ensuring that students develop greater expertise through a curriculum that is carefully sequenced and rooted in the unique nature of each subject.
Long Term Plan & End Points
Our long-term plans show the units of work taught in each subject and when they are taught. They provide an overview of the curriculum across the academic year and demonstrate how learning is sequenced within each subject.
From our progression maps, we have identified end points for each unit of study.These make clear what students should know, understand and be able to do by the end of each unit. They ensure that learning builds over time in a logical and coherent sequence, helping students to secure the knowledge and skills needed for future learning. Teachers regularly check that students are secure in these endpoints and provide support where needed.
Knowledge Organisers
Our knowledge organisers set out the key knowledge, concepts and vocabulary that students need to learn in each unit of study. They are designed to support students in securing the unit end points and provide a useful resource for learning at home. They also help parents and carers understand what is being taught and how they can support their child’s learning.
