Health and Social Care

The health and social care department works to develop students understanding of individuals within society that require support and care within the healthcare sector. In health and social care we teach that every person matters and must be treated with dignity and respect allowing students to go into the world with a greater understanding of challenges faced by individuals within society and the tools to allow them to show empathy and understanding as well as the knowledge to care for service users within this chosen profession.

Health and social care incorporate elements of subjects such as science, history, and religious studies to develop students understanding of the care involved in an ethical manner. Students are encouraged to think deeply about how we treat individuals on every level, not only physically but socially, mentally, and spiritually. The course allows students to apply their skills to learn and understand the medical knowledge but also to understand the health care sector historically and how it has evolved into the professions we know today. It develops students’ skills in critical thinking, resilience, empathy, and compassion and encourage students within life case studies to apply these skills to give the person the care that they need and deserve.

Students learn in a safe environment where they can share their own experiences with their peers. These experiences allow them to empathise and consider other people allowing them to develop skills that are required within the health care profession. Resilience and excellent organisational skills are required throughout health and social care and students will be able to take these skills with them as they take the next steps on their career path.
