Design Technology

Design education empowers students to reach their full potential in creativity, self-efficacy, and collaboration. Our mission is to develop students’ thinking skills and practical knowledge needed for success in the modern world.

Design Technology teaches empathy, forcing students to embrace an open mind-set, seeing the world from a new perspective, considering challenges that other people face and helping them adopt a better understanding of the world around them.

Design Technology enables students to foster their creativity, whilst solving problems. Getting the chance to take on preconceptions and being taught to be confident in their own solutions; whilst seeing the merit of a variety of approaches to an end goal.

Nurturing curiosity, Design Technology encourages students to always be seeking new understandings and become proactive problem solvers in every aspect of their lives. Teamwork is crucial. Students learn to trust others, working together effectively and embracing their peers’ strengths.

At the heart of this, Design Technology teaches you to see. And it is only when you choose to believe in yourself that you can have an impact. With that we have a desire to deliver a curriculum in which students produce high quality outcomes in a variety of different disciplines, including; resistant materials, fashion and textiles and food technology.

KS3 Design Technology

Design Technology

In year 7 we study a range of Design Technology sub areas, giving the students an introduction to new processes, material areas, machinery & techniques. Students have the opportunity to design & make products within Fashion & Textiles, Resistant materials & CAD CAM.

In year 8 students build upon their skills learnt in yr7 to carry out more complex design & make tasks within CAD CAM, Fashion & Textiles & Resistant Materials, leading to students having the opportunity to take their studies further at GCSE level.

Food Technology

In year 7 we study safety and hygiene in the kitchen, use of equipment, healthy eating and basic practical skills to build a foundation of knowledge. Students will explore the range of skills through a range of different practical cooking tasks throughout the year.

In year 8 we study healthy eating by exploring the Eatwell guide in more detail, learning about food nutrition and developing more complex practical skills including the making of full meals. Students will continue to build on their basic skills to become more independent learners and have the opportunity to amend and develop existing recipes.
